KABlibresidency@gmail.com

Dive in Tokyo

MANIFESTO: Welcome to our extraordinary workshop! Here, thoughts and philosophy intertwine with the flavors of our open kitchen. However, this time, we're swapping pans for words. We jot down our thoughts, project them onto the walls of the kitchen and onto our bodies. And why not outside, too, to share our dialogue with the world?
The open kitchen transforms into our playground, where words aren't just ingredients but become symbols, akin to Japanese stories and poems. Together, we're not just preparing a meal; we're crafting a literary symphony. Each of us contributes, much like different flavors in a recipe.
Our words, a playful journey into the unknown, reflect the collective spirit when we share our realms of thought – each contributing something unique to their own kaleidoscope. Like in a Haiku, our conversations blend into a harmonious exploration of gender, literature, and the interplay of emotions and expression.
In this community kitchen, we write for the soul and share thoughts as symbols of shared experiences. Writing transforms into a photographic performance. We delve into feminist perspectives, scrutinizing how women feel represented. Our collective manifesto serves as a canvas. Join us on this journey, where we create a space where words aren't just written but also read, experienced, and shared. Everyone is warmly invited, regardless of prior knowledge – come and share your thoughts, stories, and the essence of life with us. Time is too short. Looking forward to meeting you, Catrine.

STORY ROOMBODY, FREEDOM AND SPACE

THE FEMALE WISDOM
In the complex landscape of modern Japanese society, where traditional gender hierarchies persist despite advancements, the introduction of „Female Wisdom“ by the German artist Catrine Val takes on a confrontational stance.
Japan, despite its technological and economic prowess, grapples with deeply rooted gender inequalities and traditional expectations for women. The performance becomes a critical commentary on conventional gender hierarchies as Catrine Val strategically positions each female philosopher as a symbolic placeholder for potential future female icons in Japan. By showcasing these historical figures in a contemporary light, the project challenges the status quo and prompts a reconsideration of the role of women in shaping intellectual discourse. The choice to reimagine the reappearance of female philosophers becomes a deliberate act of disruption, questioning the persistent male dominance not only within the philosophical canon. Through artistic interpretation, Catrine Val not only celebrates the intellectual prowess of these women but also underscores the urgency for Japan to recognize and uplift its contemporary female thinkers.

The young curator team of Channel, a collective run by Chisato Kainuma (Musashino Art University) and Hana Takeda (Nihon University College of Art)and other women from different countries of Asia invites the internationally acclaimed German artist Catrine Val to her first exhibition in Japan. In the luminous convergence of artistic prowess and cultural resonance, she will presents two main projects, ‚Light Matters‘ and the visionary project ‚Female Wisdom,‘ on the esteemed stage in the heart of Tokyo.

LIGHT MATTERS
LIGHT MATTERS project Tokyo,Feb - March2024 In the muted echoes of our contemporary geopolitical landscape, where media lenses fixate on global flashpoints, a poignant narrative unfolds—transcending borders, defying traditional scripts. Amidst geopolitical tumult—from Gaza to Ukraine, Somalia to Hong Kong—a silent migration emerges, a brain drain fueled by desperation and persecution.
In the unassuming shadows of oblivion, after the political upheaval in Hong Kong has slipped from the media spotlight, the fate of each individual remains intricately linked to past events. Traumas persist, people endure in prisons, and many strive to navigate an enduring political reality, seeking continuity and a future amid challenging circumstances.
This overlooked reality forcefully reminds us of the fragility of free speech and ongoing struggles for individual freedoms, even as they fade from the glaring spotlight of public attention. The once-vibrant and urban city now lingers as a ghost in the memories of those who fled to London or Taipei in 2019 and 2020. This mass exodus paints a sombre picture of our times, where refugee numbers have never been higher, and the diaspora has become an unforeseen reality for so man
①Fashion of freedom
2.16 (Fri.) 18:00~20:00
Participation fee: Free
In this event, participants are asked to bring a piece of clothing so bold that they would normally hesitate to go out in it, and to create a work of art freely based on the theme of the clothing while thinking of the meaning it symbolizes and their own feelings. At the end of the event, the participants will leave wearing the clothes they brought with them, rebuilding their perception and confidence in their clothes and themselves based on the in-depth self-analysis conducted through the workshop. This workshop embodies the "fashion of freedom", which aims to break through the shackles of traditional concepts by releasing one's own emotions and affirming one's own ideas and values.

②SIKGU Workshop
2.17 (Sat.) 17:00~19:00
Participation fee: Free
A workshop where facilitator Yubin Lee will introduce her photo book “SIKGU”, and become SIKGU with both participants. SIKGU is a Korean term that refers to the relationship between people who eat together while staying under the same roof. In Korean, it is often used to mean the same thing as “family”, but it is also used for people who are not family members, meaning that they become as close to each other as blood relatives through meals. In this workshop, participants are asked to bring their own tableware, and will cook and eat “Bibimbap”, a Korean dish together. “Bibimbap” is a dish that presents the possibility of fusion and harmony by mixing multiple namul (ingredients) of different flavors and colors with rice, bringing together different ingredients to form a delicious meal. The diverse dining tables will provide an opportunity to discuss the wisdom that women have built in the kitchen and their perspectives on gender in Asia, including Japan and Korea.
③ Beyond the Bento
2.18 (Sun.) 15:00~17:00
Participation fee: Free
This workshop will introduce the history of “bento” in Japan, and will introduce some memorable obento of people who came from different backgrounds and nationalities, as well as the thoughts and episodes behind the bento. Based on the introduction, participants will also share their own episodes related to the bento while actually expressing their own memorable bento or ideal bento in various forms such as, draw, paper clay, origami, and letters. In the end, the workshop aims to connect individual episodes to the story of society, and to discover the commonalities, diversity, and colorful “feelings” packed in a small bento box.https://www.instagram.com/p/C3FZbysyNsW/?fbclid=IwAR2Yx9S4UzqqwTD0Bzo04-DRe0Gcce3zY4THPMMR5o3p_p6Bg9cXB9SocVg 2023: 8th of March, protagonisten : Sinn und Leffers Kassel, Germany
